Norma is a neo-art rock band that is praised for their “multidimensional experience.” They have a fancy stage show and a ponderous set of instrumental passages, but their music sounds like something from post-Explosions in the Sky.
The tenor Joseph Calleja sings the role of Pollione, Norma’s lover and proconsul. He has a burnished tone with an ardent quality, but sometimes his slightly nasal singing can make him sound pinched. It was a problem here, especially when the role’s jealousy turned into rage and outbursts.
Radvanovsky, who is the Met’s new Donizetti soprano, played Norma with a steady intensity, rising to pianissimos with a piercing quality. Her sound told a tale of the singer’s intentions, exposing the subtext of the character’s jealousy. There were smudgy moments of coloratura passagework, but she rose to tender phrases with sensitive and expressive vocalization.
The ferociousness of Bellini’s opera about an eponymous druid leader who commands her warriors and the conquering Roman proconsul to revolt carries the story’s themes of brutal clashes of cultures. The Metropolitan Opera opened its season with the opera Monday night, conducted by Carlo Rizzi and starring Elizabeth Radvanovsky as Norma.
